Texas ZIP code map

Sheet TX-14 · prefixes 733, 750–799, 885 · lowest 73301 · highest 88595

Texas ZIP codes run in one long block from 75001 to 79999, plus two odd cases: 733 for the IRS in Austin and 885 for El Paso post office boxes, which sits inside a range otherwise used by New Mexico. The first three digits identify the sectional center that sorts the mail, and that is what the table below lists.

How the numbering works

The first digit, 7, covers Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. The second digit splits Texas into five broad bands that run roughly north-east to west: 75x is Dallas and North East Texas, 76x is Fort Worth and North Central Texas, 77x is Houston and the upper coast, 78x is Central and South Texas, and 79x is West Texas and the Panhandle. The third digit picks the sectional center facility that sorts for that area, which is why the big cities take several prefixes to themselves — Dallas has 752 and 753, Houston has 770 through 772, and Fort Worth has 761.

Two prefixes break the pattern. 733 belongs to Austin and is used only by the Internal Revenue Service; 73301 and 73344 receive no street mail. 885 covers post office boxes in El Paso and falls inside the 88xxx block otherwise assigned to New Mexico, because El Paso is served from that direction.

Prefixes describe the sorting facility, not a legal boundary. A few ZIP codes near the edges of these ranges serve towns in the neighboring block.

Why a ZIP code is not an area

A ZIP code is a set of delivery routes, not a shape. Rural ZIPs follow the roads a carrier drives, so two houses a quarter mile apart on opposite sides of a highway can sit in different codes, and a single code can straddle a county line. Codes ending in unusual patterns are often single buildings — a university, a refinery, a military post — with enough mail to justify their own number.

The mailing city printed on an address is the post office that serves it, not the municipality. Large stretches of unincorporated Harris, Bexar and Travis counties carry Houston, San Antonio and Austin addresses while lying outside the city limits, which matters for tax rates, school districts and which police force answers a call. The Census Bureau publishes ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, a set of approximate polygons built from the codes on individual addresses, and those are what most online ZIP maps actually draw.

El Paso's 79936, on the east side of the city, is regularly listed among the most populous ZIP codes in the country. At the other extreme, several codes in the Big Bend and Panhandle counties cover hundreds of square miles for a few hundred people.

Finding the right code

To place an unfamiliar Texas address, read the prefix first: anything starting 75 or 76 is in the northern half, 77 is the Houston side, 78 is Central or South Texas, and 79 is west of the Pecos or up in the Panhandle. From there the counties map and the area code map narrow it down, since telephone area codes and ZIP prefixes cover broadly similar territory in Texas — 806 matches 790–794, 915 matches 799, and 956 matches 785.
